The temperatures plummeted as a blizzard drew close to town. The blue sky had turned a dull crimson before it was covered by a cloak of black velvet. I wrapped myself with a cotton blanket, hands around my legs. The cold ate into my marrows despite the heater being switched on to full blast. For the past few moments I had been staring at the beautiful walls.
"Janice, thank you for the hot chocolate. How's your trip to the countryside? You posted some photos of yourself on Facebook. It looked like you had a lot of fun. Erm... I called you here... here to... say... something. Will you marry me?" I asked Janice sheepishly. Janice had long hair with length matching Rapunzel, just that it was black instead of the strawberry blonde as stated in the fairytale. She had lips red as roses and skin fairer than any I have ever seen. Just then the doorbell rang.
"Coming!" I whispered under my breath, "who dares to ruin my proposal?"
"Rebecca! Why are you here?" I asked and added quietly, "I was just proposing to Janice."
"Follow me somewhere, I have something to show you," she replied and for some reason, there was a tinge of sadness behind every one of her words, becoming more pronounced with every word.
"Wait! I was -" I was cut short as she dragged me by the hand. After what felt like an interminable half hour we arrived at a church. Rebecca asked me to go all the way in. I had told her to follow me but she denied, turning to face the other direction. I shrugged it off and walked into the church.
The church walls was white in colours. That was all about the church I noticed. What grabbed my attention was what was at the end of the church. I went over. I was held down to the ground by something. Shock? Denial? Anguish? I forgot. In the casket was a girl. She had long hair with length matching Rapunzel, just that it was black instead of the strawberry blonde as stated in the fairytale. She had lips red as roses and skin fairer than any I have ever seen. I felt tears cascading out of my eyes.
"Didn't she just come over to my house? She made me hot chocolate and I proposed. I proposed to her just now!" I screamed the last sentence. Rebecca came to my side. I was sure she had cried.
She placed a hand on my shoulders, soothing me, "Daniel, she was never at your house. She had passed away yesterday night on a coach. The coach crashed with another coach after it had skidded on the snow flooded roads. Daniel, you were alone at home just now." I searched the depths of my memories. I was home just now. The walls were a dull shade of white, with parts of it coming off. I had been talking to myself and no one passed me hot chocolate. The heater was never switched on. There was no one with me just now.
I gripped my head, coming back to reality. I broke down. Like a machine that was made to run non-stop breaking down in smoke, now overheated. Emotions burst forth, none could be held back. Tears poured out in torrents. My heart went to and fro, between two different sides, one say "Janice is gone" and the other saying "Janice agreed to the marriage".
I screamed and yelled and wailed in front of the casket. Janice had passed on. I was at the hospital yesterday. I left her body to her family and walked home aimlessly. This whole morning I had been talking to no one. "Will you marry me?" I said that to no one. No one. Janice had left.
